They were planning to have lunch that day, and she assumed he was calling to tell her what time he'd come by. But it was a little early to call, and she was glad that she'd been the one to answer the phone. Her mother would have been annoyed.
“It's a beautiful day, isn't it?” he asked, sounding as though he had something else on his mind.
“Will you bring the surprise with you when you come to the house?” She had no idea what it was, but he made it sound exciting."
"He hesitated before he answered. “I was kind of thinking I'd take you to the surprise. It's a little harder to bring it to you.
